"Matsyakumari II", the new Fisheries Research Vessel
being constructed for the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology
(CIFT), was launched on 04.01.2008, by Smt. Pratibha Pawar, wife
of Shri. Sharad Pawar , Honble union Minister for Agiculture, at
a function held at the Slipway complex of the comapny at Thoppumpady.
Shri. Sharad Pawar, was the Chief Guest on the occassion. Shri.
V.S. Achuthanandan, Hon'ble Chief Minister of kerala, presided over
the function. Shri. S. Sharma, Hon'ble Fisheries Minister, Kerala,
Dr. Mangala Rai, Secretary (DARE) and Deputy Director General ICAR,
were also present.
The Vessel “Matsyakumari II” is a fisheries Research
Vessel constructed under IRS class. The vessel is 17.50 Meters long,
5.75 Meters wide and has a draught of 2 meters. It is fitted with
a 325 HP Cummins Diesel Engine with imported ZF 4:1 gear box. The
vessel is equipped with hydraulic steering with auto pilot, and
modern navigation, communication and safety equipments. Cruising
speed of the vessel is 9 knots.
The vessel can remain at sea for nine days with 12 people on board
(10 crew and 2 scientists ). The vessel has facilities for stern
trawling, gill netting, long line fishing and can also be used for
fishery survey and coastal studies in tropical waters. The vessel
is equipped with a Blast Freezer of 150 Kg capacity for quick freezing
the catch to -55 ° C and a main fish hold of of 2 MT capacity where
the fish can be stored for long at -20 ° C.
The Vessel will be delivered soon to its owners, CIFT, on completion
of balance outfitting works. This is the first fully ocean going
vessel constructed by the KSINC. With the successful launching of
"Matsyakumari II", KSINC gets in to a league of the small
shipyards capable of building ocean going vessels.
